The Department of English at West Virginia University invites applications for a full-time Teaching Assistant Professor position, beginning fall term, 2016. The successful candidate will be expected to teach in our Undergraduate Writing Program and to assume the responsibilities of Associate Undergraduate Writing Coordinator. Required qualifications include: a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in English with an emphasis in Rhetoric and Composition or a related field (or evidence of extensive preparation in rhetoric and composition); evidence of the ability to oversee the immediate and local needs of our undergraduate writing instructors (e.g., assist with professional development, teaching observations, and routine student/instructor questions). Knowledge of and experience in online instruction and the development of online courses are welcome.


Teaching Assistant Professors at WVU are eligible for promotion; however, promotion to senior ranks is not required for institutional commitment and career stability in a Teaching faculty appointment. There is no traditional research assignment. Instead, teaching faculty are expected to support curricular goals and assessment processes including, in this position, evaluating and improving the undergraduate writing program. Appointments are renewable, with provision for up to three-year renewable terms, with no maximum number of terms. This position is a full-time nine-month appointment and includes full benefits. The teaching assignment is four courses each semester with one course each semester redefined for administrative responsibilities, resulting in a 3-3 course load. Part-time summer teaching and administrative responsibilities are expected with additional compensation.
